Chlamydia trachomatis: This species is responsible for a range of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including genital chlamydia. Genital chlamydia is one of the most common bacterial STIs worldwide. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. Chlamydia trachomatis can also cause infections of the eyes (trachoma) and respiratory tract (e.g., pneumonia).
Chlamydia pneumoniae: This species can cause respiratory infections in humans, including pneumonia and bronchitis. Infections with Chlamydia pneumoniae are typically mild and self-limiting but can sometimes lead to more severe respiratory complications, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying respiratory conditions.
Chlamydia psittaci: This species is primarily associated with psittacosis, also known as parrot fever or ornithosis. Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease transmitted to humans through contact with infected birds, particularly psittacine birds such as parrots, cockatiels, and parakeets. In humans, psittacosis can cause flu-like symptoms, pneumonia, and in severe cases, respiratory failure and death.
