Endocarditis: S. mitis is one of the leading causes of infective endocarditis, particularly in patients with underlying heart conditions or those who have undergone dental procedures.
Bacteremia and septicemia: Infections caused by S. mitis can lead to bloodstream infections, which may result in sepsis if left untreated.
Pneumonia: S. mitis has been implicated in cases of pneumonia, especially in individuals with predisposing factors such as chronic respiratory diseases or impaired lung function.
Meningitis: Although less common, S. mitis can cause meningitis, particularly in neonates, elderly individuals, or those with underlying medical conditions that compromise the blood-brain barrier.
Dental infections: S. mitis is part of the normal oral microbiota and can contribute to dental caries and periodontal disease if allowed to proliferate excessively.
