Asymptomatic Infection: Many people who become infected with Toxoplasma do not experience any symptoms and may not even be aware of the infection. In these cases, the immune system typically controls the parasite, and the individual remains asymptomatic.
Flu-like Symptoms: Some individuals may experience mild flu-like symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes, as a result of acute toxoplasmosis. These symptoms usually resolve on their own within a few weeks.
Congenital Toxoplasmosis: If a pregnant woman becomes infected with Toxoplasma for the first time during pregnancy, the parasite can be transmitted to the fetus. Congenital toxoplasmosis can cause serious health problems in the newborn, including eye damage, hearing loss, intellectual disability, and neurological disorders. The severity of congenital toxoplasmosis depends on the timing of maternal infection during pregnancy and the effectiveness of treatment.
Ocular Toxoplasmosis: Toxoplasma can also affect the eyes, leading to a condition known as ocular toxoplasmosis. Ocular toxoplasmosis can cause inflammation in the retina, leading to blurred vision, floaters, and, in severe cases, permanent vision loss. Ocular toxoplasmosis can occur in both congenitally infected individuals and those who acquire the infection later in life.
Severe Disease in Immunocompromised Individuals: In individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or organ transplant recipients, Toxoplasma infection can cause severe or life-threatening complications. These may include encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), pneumonitis (inflammation of the lungs), and other systemic manifestations of toxoplasmosis.
Reactivation of Latent Infection: In immunocompromised individuals, Toxoplasma infection can also result from the reactivation of a latent infection acquired earlier in life. Reactivated toxoplasmosis can lead to severe disease and may require aggressive treatment.
