Common knowledge amoung some professionals (MD and ND):
Vitamin D: Some research suggests a possible link between vitamin D deficiency and a higher risk of seizures in people with epilepsy. Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels might have potential benefits, but evidence supporting vitamin D supplementation specifically for epilepsy is limited.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 supplements, particularly those containing EPA and DHA, may have anti-inflammatory properties and potential neurological benefits. Some studies suggest that omega-3 supplementation might have a positive effect on seizure control, but more research is needed.
Vitamin B6: Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) supplementation might be considered for certain types of epilepsy, such as pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. However, its use should be guided by healthcare professionals and is specific to certain forms of epilepsy.
Ketogenic Diet: While not a supplement, the ketogenic diet, which is high in fats, adequate in protein, and low in carbohydrates, has shown some effectiveness in reducing seizures, especially in children with certain types of epilepsy that are resistant to medications. It's a specialized diet that should be supervised by healthcare professionals and registered dietitians.
Probiotics: The role of probiotics in managing epilepsy is an area of ongoing research. Some studies suggest a potential link between gut health and neurological conditions, but their specific role in epilepsy management requires further investigation.
