Common knowledge amoung some professionals (MD and ND):
Multivitamins and Minerals: Individuals with anorexia nervosa may be at risk of nutrient deficiencies due to restricted food intake. A healthcare provider might recommend a multivitamin or specific supplements to address deficiencies in vitamins (like vitamin D, B vitamins) and minerals (such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron). These supplements should be used under medical supervision and tailored to individual needs.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3 supplements may be considered due to potential deficiencies resulting from limited intake of fatty fish or other sources. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain function and overall health. However, the evidence for their effectiveness specifically in anorexia nervosa treatment is limited.
Probiotics: Gut health and the gut-brain axis have received attention in mental health conditions. While there's ongoing research into the role of gut microbiota in eating disorders, there's limited evidence to support the use of probiotics specifically for anorexia nervosa treatment. The focus in treating anorexia nervosa typically revolves around nutritional rehabilitation, therapy, and medical monitoring.
Calcium and Vitamin D: Low bone density and osteoporosis are common complications in individuals with anorexia nervosa due to nutritional deficiencies. Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, either through diet or supplements, might be recommended to support bone health and prevent fractures.
