Pulmonary Nocardiosis: Pulmonary nocardiosis is the most common form of the disease. Nocardia asteroides can cause pneumonia with symptoms such as cough, chest pain, fever, and difficulty breathing. The infection can lead to the formation of lung abscesses and cavities.
Cutaneous Nocardiosis: Cutaneous nocardiosis occurs when Nocardia asteroides enters the skin through wounds, trauma, or direct inoculation. It can present as localized abscesses, cellulitis, nodules, or ulcerating lesions. Skin infections caused by Nocardia asteroides may be chronic and difficult to treat.
Central Nervous System (CNS) Nocardiosis: CNS nocardiosis is a severe manifestation of the disease and can occur through hematogenous spread or direct extension from other sites of infection, such as the lungs or skin. Nocardia asteroides can cause brain abscesses, meningitis, or spinal cord infections. Symptoms may include headache, seizures, altered mental status, and focal neurological deficits.
Disseminated Nocardiosis: Disseminated nocardiosis occurs when the infection spreads beyond the initial site of infection to involve multiple organ systems. This can lead to a systemic illness with involvement of the lungs, skin, CNS, bones, joints, and other organs. Disseminated nocardiosis is more common in individuals with impaired immunity, such as those with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, or those receiving immunosuppressive therapy.
Ocular Nocardiosis: Nocardia asteroides infections can also affect the eyes, causing ocular infections such as keratitis, scleritis, endophthalmitis, or orbital cellulitis. These infections can result from direct inoculation, hematogenous spread, or extension from adjacent structures.

Different labs use different software to read the sample. See this post for more details.
One lab may say you have none, another may say you have a lot! - This may be solely due to the software they are using to estimate.
We deem lab specific values using values from the KM method for each specific lab to be the most reliable.
