Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are the two main pathogenic species within the genus Neisseria.
Neisseria meningitidis: It is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis and can also cause septicemia. Meningococcal infections can be severe and life-threatening.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae: It is the causative agent of gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection that primarily affects the genital and reproductive tract. Untreated gonorrhea can lead to serious complications.
Normal Microbiota:
Some species of Neisseria, such as Neisseria lactamica and Neisseria sicca, are part of the normal microbiota in the respiratory tract of humans.
Transmission:
Neisseria meningitidis is transmitted through respiratory droplets and can lead to outbreaks of meningococcal disease, especially in crowded or closed settings.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is primarily transmitted through sexual contact.
Vaccination:
There are vaccines available for Neisseria meningitidis to prevent meningococcal infections. These vaccines are recommended for certain age groups and populations at higher risk.
As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, there is no vaccine widely available for Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Antibiotic Resistance:
Neisseria gonorrhoeae has shown a concerning trend of developing antibiotic resistance, which complicates treatment efforts.
The interactions are based on data from 1000 healthy individuals using shotgun 10M reads Precision Biome, a provider in full conformity to EU regulations for health information
The width of the lines indicates R2 (the coefficient of determination)
Green indicates positive slope
Red indicates negative
Interactions are not two way because incidence of each bacteria are different
Neisseria impacts on other bacteria of the same rank
