Toxin Production: Some cyanobacteria within the order Nostocales can produce toxins known as cyanotoxins. Common cyanotoxins include microcystins, anatoxins, and saxitoxins. Exposure to water containing high levels of these toxins can lead to adverse health effects in humans, including gastrointestinal symptoms, skin irritation, respiratory problems, and, in severe cases, liver damage or neurological effects.
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs): Under certain conditions, cyanobacteria, including those in the order Nostocales, can undergo rapid growth and form dense populations known as harmful algal blooms (HABs). These blooms can produce high concentrations of toxins, posing risks to both aquatic life and human health.
Water Contamination: The primary route of human exposure to cyanotoxins is through the ingestion of contaminated water or the consumption of aquatic organisms that have accumulated these toxins. Recreational activities in water bodies with HABs, such as swimming or boating, can also lead to exposure.
