Respiratory Infections: Stenotrophomonas species can cause respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis, and tracheobronchitis, especially in individuals with cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or those who are immunocompromised.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Stenotrophomonas infections can lead to UTIs, particularly in patients with indwelling urinary catheters, urinary tract abnormalities, or other predisposing factors. These infections may be more common in healthcare settings.
Bloodstream Infections (Bacteremia): In severe cases, Stenotrophomonas species can enter the bloodstream and cause bacteremia, especially in immunocompromised patients, critically ill individuals, or those with central venous catheters or other invasive devices.
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Stenotrophomonas infections may also manifest as skin and soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis, abscesses, or wound infections, particularly in individuals with compromised skin integrity or chronic wounds.
Endocarditis: Although rare, Stenotrophomonas species have been implicated in infective endocarditis, which is an infection of the heart valves or inner lining of the heart chambers. This condition can be life-threatening and often requires prolonged antibiotic treatment and sometimes surgical intervention.
Meningitis: In rare cases, Stenotrophomonas meningitis may occur, particularly in neonates, elderly patients, or individuals with underlying central nervous system conditions. This type of infection can be severe and requires prompt diagnosis and treatment.
Ocular Infections: Stenotrophomonas species have been reported as a cause of ocular infections, such as keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) or conjunctivitis, particularly in contact lens wearers or individuals with eye injuries.

Different labs use different software to read the sample. See this post for more details.
One lab may say you have none, another may say you have a lot! - This may be solely due to the software they are using to estimate.
We deem lab specific values using values from the KM method for each specific lab to be the most reliable.
