Spirochaetales: NCBI 136, [order]

Back to details

| Spirochaetales| Spirochaetales Buchanan 1917 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Gupta et al. 2013| spirochetes

  1. Pathogenic Spirochetes:

    • Some spirochetes within the order Spirochaetales are known to be pathogenic and can cause diseases in humans and animals. Notable examples include:
      • Borrelia burgdorferi: Causes Lyme disease, which is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks.
      • Treponema pallidum: Causes syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection.
      • Leptospira spp.: Cause leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that can be transmitted through contact with contaminated water or soil.
  2. Commensal and Environmental Spirochetes:

    • Not all spirochetes within the order Spirochaetales are pathogenic. Some are part of the normal microbial flora in the gastrointestinal tracts of animals, including humans, and contribute to various ecological processes.
  3. Lyme Disease:

    • Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by ticks, is a well-known spirochetal infection. It can lead to symptoms such as fever, fatigue, joint pain, and skin rashes. If left untreated, Lyme disease can progress to more severe complications.
  4. Syphilis:

    • Treponema pallidum, the spirochete responsible for syphilis, can cause a range of symptoms, including sores, rashes, and systemic involvement. If not treated, syphilis can progress to more serious stages affecting multiple organs.
  5. Leptospirosis:

    • Leptospirosis, caused by various Leptospira species, can lead to flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, affect the liver, kidneys, and other organs. It is often associated with exposure to water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals.
