  1. Oral health: Veillonella species are prevalent in the oral cavity and are associated with dental plaque and oral biofilms. While Veillonella are generally considered commensal bacteria, they can contribute to oral health issues when present in excessive amounts or in association with other pathogenic bacteria. Veillonella spp. have been found in dental caries (cavities), periodontal disease, and other oral infections, although their specific roles in these conditions are not fully understood.

  2. Respiratory infections: Veillonella species, including Veillonella dispar, have been occasionally implicated in respiratory infections, particularly in individuals with underlying respiratory conditions or compromised immune systems. In some cases, Veillonella spp. have been isolated from respiratory specimens, such as sputum or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, in patients with pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or cystic fibrosis. However, their significance as pathogens in respiratory infections is not well-established.

  3. Gastrointestinal health: Veillonella species are common constituents of the human gut microbiota, particularly in the colon, where they ferment lactate and other organic acids produced by other gut bacteria. Veillonella spp. are involved in the metabolism of lactate and cross-feeding interactions with other gut microbes. While Veillonella are generally considered beneficial members of the gut microbiota, alterations in their abundance or composition have been observed in gastrointestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and colorectal cancer.

  4. Metabolic interactions: Veillonella species, including Veillonella dispar, are known to participate in metabolic interactions with other members of the gut microbiota. They metabolize lactate to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as acetate and propionate, which can have systemic effects on host metabolism, immune function, and gut barrier integrity. Veillonella spp. have been implicated in the metabolism of dietary fibers and carbohydrates, contributing to the overall metabolic activity of the gut microbiota.

Lab Reporting

Different labs use different software to read the sample. See this post for more details.
One lab may say you have none, another may say you have a lot! - This may be solely due to the software they are using to estimate.
We deem lab specific values using values from the KM method for each specific lab to be the most reliable.
